END OF SUMMER READING

Two books I absolutely tore though this summer are Where’d You Go Bernadette & You’ll Grow Out of It. I guess you could call it the summer of book titles with contractions. No don’t do that. That’s silly.
Summer of funny ladies. Yes, we’ll go with that.

Where’d You Go Bernadette was recommended to me by my mom. It is unique in the way the story unfolds: no chapters, mainly through a barrage of memos, emails, and other correspondence. The reader must piece together the course of events, just like Burnadette’s daughter, to find out why her mother is really hiding and most importantly, WHERE. I really enjoyed the fact that this is a mystery that is FUNNY, rather than dark. And (bonus!) no one dies. I do enjoy a good mystery, but as lame as it may sound, I’m not always in the mood for death, violence and the other dark and sad subject matter that often accompanies said genre. The author, Maria Semple, has a knack for letting the reader in on inside jokes. Perhaps that’s why it is no surprise that she adds writing for Arrested Development to her list of credentials. It does touch on mental health issues, but ever so lightly, so you won’t feel bad laughing.

Jessi Klein's You’ll Grow Out of It is like spending time with a funny friend. I have yet to finish reading the book, but only because I don't want it to end! It is like that favorite shirt or dress that I rarely wear because I like to "save it." Must be the old Polish lady inside of me. If I wear it today, I can't wear it tomorrow! If I read it tonight, there's no more Jessi Klein to hang out with tomorrow! A final thought after reading all these self-deprecating tales in the book (ya, know in the 1st half). She had me convinced she was a wolf, but after a Google image search, I now know she's a total babe, even if she isn't a poodle. Read the book, you'll understand!
